Penny + Giles announces a new variant of the popular contactless rotary position sensor range, which uses a factory programmable non-contact Hall effect sensor system.
TPS280DP is designed as the modern alternative to rotary potentiometers fitted on high performance race car and motorcycle induction systems.
Replacing a potentiometer with the TPS280DP will eliminate premature failure due to electrical noise – caused by potentiometer wear. TPS280DP is life tested to 20 million cycles (40 million operations), more than SIX TIMES that of a potentiometer in this application.
This new product will be shown for the first time at the Professional Motorsport World Expo 2009 in Cologne, Germany.

Penny + Giles’ range of draw wire linear sensors extends measurement capability to 5000mm.
DLS is a compact sensor that provides accurate measurement in a range of strokes up to 5000mm and is ideal for use where space is a constraint or where traditional linear potentiometers are not suitable. In extending its product range Penny + Giles is offering more choice to OEMs in a number of industries including construction, agriculture, materials handling, aerospace and automotive. There are three sensors in the range: DLS-P60 has a measurement range from 100 to 1500mm; DLS-P96 has a measurement range from 2000 to 3000mm; and DLS-P115 has a measurement range from 3000 to 5000mm. All are encased in a high strength aluminium housing and sealed to IP65 for use in harsh environments. They provide virtually infinite resolution with a long life cycle and can withstand temperatures from –20 to 80ºC.
The highly flexible stainless steel measuring wire is wound onto a drum with the aid of a long-life spring motor. The winding drum is linked axially to a multi-turn potentiometer, incremental encoder or absolute encoder. Linear movement is transformed into a rotation by the draw-wire principle and converted into a proportional analogue signal or to countable increments. The sensors can be supplied with a choice of analogue outputs (potentiometer, 0-10Vdc voltage or two-wire 4-20mA current) or digital outputs provided by encoders.
The sensor can be orientated in any direction and has mounting grooves on four sides of the housing to make the sensors easy to install. A range of accessories is also available to assist the user during installation including: magnetic holders for the wire clip; wire extensions; pulleys; and mounting clamps. Electrical connections are via a one metre integral cable or eight-pin flange connector to DIN 45326.
All products are supplied from Penny + Giles’s ISO9001 certified facility and carry the CE mark. For more information about the DLS and the range of rotary position sensors available visit www.pennyandgiles.com or phone (USA) +1 562 531 6500 or (Europe) +44 (0) 1202 409409.
